The social economy is a vital part of the culture and identity of Huntington Beach. Both locals and visitors enjoy the City’s vibrant socializing options, which provide an important incubator of cultural movements and spaces for connection, creativity, and personal expression. Downtown Main Street is the heart of the City's social economy, with numerous restaurants and venues lining the streets often embracing the beach culture and casual, laid-back atmosphere. The Sociable City Assessment will allow residents, businesses, and city officials to collaborate and develop action steps to guide the future evolution of the social economy of Huntington Beach. Understanding the current challenges and opportunities of the City’s social economy will provide for better governance and management, create a safer environment, and help to support jobs and businesses.

Aims

  • Preserve and advocate for social, cultural and economic value of dining and entertainment
  • Examine risk factors for crime, harm and disorder in social districts
  • Sustain peaceful co-existence of residents and businesses in mixed-use areas
  • Enhance communication between government and businesses regarding policy, procedures and resource allocation

Outcomes

  • Select and train dedicated staff to become leading advocates for a safe and vibrant life at night
  • Identify a citywide alliance model to implement a consensus-driven action plan
  • Establish data collection methods to evaluate and monitor progress over time in sociability, risk and compliance
